What are studios looking for? How can I get into a good animation school? What should I be studying?

I get a lot of these types of questions now and again, and I never know how to answer them. I can’t be sure of what studios are looking for, I don’t control admissions policies to schools, and I have little idea what makes for a current and relevant curriculum. There are a lot of variables in your bid for a career in animation, and it’s kind of impossible to control most of them. You must be crazy to want this job!

I find it helpful to focus on the things I can control. Among those things are your study habits and how you spend your personal time. It’s good to work hard and have goals—without them we would get nowhere. Study hard and make decisive strides towards achieving your art goals. But in the heat of that pursuit, don’t forget to go out and live your life!

If you spend any amount of time looking at artists online, you’ve probably figured out by now that there are about a million dudes and dudettes in internetville who draw better than you (I relive this realization daily). Once your have done your best to rise to their level, the only tool you have to compete with these crazy talents is your background, your personal character—is you!

Consider developing your whole self with the same raw focus and intensity that you develop a particular skill set. Get focused. Go out, have adventures. Run, jump, skin your knee, fall in love, root loudly for the away team at a baseball game, barely escape a crash of stampeding rhinos, live to see another day. Experience things big and small. Go for a walk. The world is full of wonders.

I know this advice is not particularly animation-specific, but maybe that’s for the best. At any rate, it is something I feel strongly about. Animation is great, and there are few things that I enjoy doing more than drawing and storytelling. But in order to have stories to tell, first you have to live them.

This is exactly the kind of shit I was talking about. I had a rant some weeks ago about people ‘hiding’ comments in their tags, and the response was mainly two things: Either people did it just because they preferred it that way for whatever reason (which in the end is really their business), or this, which is something that until I made that post I had no idea about. I didn’t know this shit was a thing. I had no idea people actually posted shit like this, because it just seems so fucking unreal.

This is bullshit, and the person who posted this is bullshit by extension.
This is some fucked up elitist mentality that only some thoughts are “worthy” of being made. That if your response doesn’t live up to their standards then why the fuck are you posting it? Keep your mouth shut because what you have to say isn’t worth hearing! This of course is further ingrained by the use of excessive caps and emoticons in the original post suggesting that anyone who makes a response like that is a child or an idiot, because there’s no faster or lazier way to discredit the other side than to imitate them with fevered, emoticon-littered writing.

Well I say fuck that. I produce my own content (and I don’t mean compiling TV gifsets) and I want to see everything everyone has to say. Even if it’s just AAAA THIS SCARED ME or WOWOWOW THIS IS SUPER CUUUUTE WOW, seeing that kind of response means a lot to me. It means I evoked that kind of response. That’s very flattering! And for people to want to censor others because they think their thoughts aren’t important or worthwhile enough to be read, frankly, that’s disgusting. No one should be pressured into feeling like they have to shut up especially on a subject and medium like motherfucking Tumblr. It’s like telling someone “GET OFF MY POST”.

And I mean let’s think practically about this, too: It’s not like every time someone reblogs your post AND ADDS TEXT a man comes to your door and sits you down and reads it out loud off a telegram. What happens is that the little list that shows “so and so reblogged your post” has one additional line of text on it saying “AND ADDED: [COMMENT YOU DON’T THINK WAS WORTH YOUR TIME]”. I would say it takes one extra second to scroll past but the amount of time spent scrolling that additional line is so insignificant I couldn’t even measure it. Most people who address this spend way more time complaining about it than they ever would spend being inconvenienced by having to read what people thought of their post (god forbid)

So in summation this whole toxic, bullshit mentality of “Hey plebeians who have the privilege of looking at my stuff! Here’s how you are and are not allowed to respond to it!” is awful and so arrogant I almost didn’t believe it was real
If you want to sort of stash your thoughts away in tags, I can’t force you not to by any means
But you should never feel like you have to hide your thoughts because they’re not ‘good enough’.
Especially not here.

All in all Tumblr is a fun site, but people are actually DISCOURAGING others voicing their opinions and comments. DeviantART is slowly dying, and it’s pretty bad, because it’s one of the few sites left where you can communicate with words, instead of reactions gifs and Tumblr memes. I’ve seen people reblog things with their comments and anons sending messages to their ask-blogs akin to “Wow, why are you commenting everything you reblog, that is so annoying.” Why would you do that? This might be an interactive shiny picturebook to some people, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but especially artists really appreciate reblogs with comments. Those pictures you like so much COME FROM SOMEWHERE, you know. By all means, voiceless reblogs are nice too because they give you exposure, but if someone has the time to say something nice, then oh my god, don’t diss them because of that. This is a really terrible attitude to have.

I’ve considered making a reblog-blog just for original content and commenting on it, and stuff like this makes me want to do it more, just to spite people who are encouraging an internet culture where everything must be just scrolled past as fast as possible, without stopping to appreciate it.

Reblogging because I’VE BEEN GRUMPYGROANING ABOUT THIS VERY THING WITH MY FRIEND FOR AGES. About how nobody seems to comment on anything anymore and just hides everything in tags, making artists have to check every single fucking reblog separately to see if there’s EVEN A TINY BIT OF FEEDBACK. Most of the time there isn’t any. IT’S REALLY RIDICULOUS AND IT BLOWS???? BECAUSE ARTISTS LIKE ME FUCKING LIVE OFF FEEDBACK. IT’S IMPORTANT TO THEM.
Even “dumb” comments like “WOW CUTE” take me and probably many others A LONG WAY.

Of course even though this may have come off sounding like that, the stuff I’m writing here isn’t to be accusatory towards people who choose not to comment. YOU ARE EXTREMELY FREE TO NOT COMMENT IF YOU DON’T WANT TO. Especially since I am also a shy butt who has trouble replying to things people write me because I never know what to reply and I become anxious as hell and bleughfb

This has also made me reconsider whether I should break the habit and comment more on posts instead of the tags from now on. Cus it’s funny how I prefer to comment on tags not due to shyness but rather I like the way texts look in tagged format (lol???) man i’m weird as fuck…but anyhow, it’s time to change that, especially when it comes to reblogging from the source just so it would benefit OP a lot more.

I thought tags were just how you were supposed to find things? I mean I flail a little in them too but I use them mainly as a way to find things on my blog or to find things on tumblr. And I don’t mind people putting their thoughts into the tags as well but I’m pretty sure this white space here is for typing whatever you will, just saying.
